According to Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, the iPhone 16 marks the first time the company has designed a smartphone “from the ground up” with AI capabilities in mind. He described the phone as pushing the boundaries of what smartphones can achieve, although Apple faces stiff competition in the AI space, as several rival brands have already integrated generative AI into their devices.
Apple Stock Drops After the Launch
Meanwhile, Apple’s stock ended flat after the event, reflecting growing concerns that the tech giant may be losing its competitive edge in the AI industry.
Investors are worried about Apple’s positioning in the rapidly evolving AI market, which is becoming increasingly central to tech innovation. These concerns come as iPhone sales, which account for around half of Apple’s revenue, have stagnated. In the nine months ending on June 29, iPhone sales slipped by 1% compared to the previous year, reflecting the need for a new advanced product lineup.
The iPhone 16 promises several exciting features. Among them are longer-lasting batteries, more powerful processors, and enhanced privacy tools. The phone is the first Apple device explicitly built to handle AI, featuring the new "Apple Intelligence" tools they previously announced in June.

Apple has added new tools for writing and creating emojis, broadening the phone's appeal to tech-savvy users. The iPhone 16 is available for pre-orders beginning on Friday, September 13, and will hit the shelves on September 20. It comes in several versions, including the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max.
iPhone 16 Pro models will have Larger Display
For the first time, the iPhone 16 Pro models will have a larger display than their predecessors, with the iPhone 16 Pro featuring a 6.3-inch screen and the Pro Max boasting a 6.9-inch display. Both models are also equipped with the thinnest borders ever seen on an Apple product. Apple claims these are the best iPhone displays yet, offering users an upgraded viewing experience.
In addition to its AI features, the iPhone 16 series also comes with a revamped design. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus now feature a vertical camera layout, a change from the horizontal layout introduced with the iPhone 13 series.
iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max feature a 48MP Fusion camera, a 48MP Ultra Wide camera, and the 5x Telephoto camera, on both models - apple.com |
Apple has also made the phone more durable, claiming that it has the toughest glass ever used in an iPhone. iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max feature a 48MP Fusion camera, a 48MP Ultra Wide camera, and a 5x Telephoto camera, available on both models.
The new iPhone 16 features a standout camera button on the side of the device, designed to enhance its usability for capturing photos and videos.
Lower Price for iPhone 16 Pro models
The iPhone 16 Pro models are priced lower than their predecessors, thanks to manufacturing shifts and duty cuts in India. These price drops are seen as part of Apple’s strategy to expand its market share in India, a rapidly growing market for smartphones. Notably, Apple has begun producing the iPhone 16 Pro models in India for the first time.

Chip Upgrade in iPhone 16 Series
Another major addition is the “Camera Control” button, a capacitive button on the side of the phone that allows users to take photos with a simple press or adjust the zoom by sliding their finger along the button.
In addition to the iPhone 16 series, Apple introduced other products at the Glowtime event. The Apple Watch Series 10 was launched to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Apple Watch. This latest version of the watch features a wide-angle OLED display, allowing users to better view the screen at an angle. The watch is also Apple’s thinnest-ever model and includes a feature that can detect signs of sleep apnea. For the first time, Apple Watch is available in a titanium finish, a more durable and lightweight alternative to traditional materials.
No Increase in the Base Storage for iPhone 16 Models
Interestingly, Apple did not announce successors to two popular smartwatch models, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and the Apple Watch SE 2, although minor updates were provided. Also, Apple included the same base storage across its iPhone 16 lineup as seen in the previous iPhone 15 series, with 128GB for iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, and iPhone 16 Pro, and 256GB for the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Another feature is the ability of the AirPods Pro to function as a clinical-grade hearing aid for those with mild to moderate hearing loss. Apple expects to receive regulatory approval for this feature soon, with plans to roll it out in over 100 countries, including the U.S., Germany, and Japan.
