The investigation into Ruf began in 2022 when Lisa Bishop, 51, reported to police that Ruf had been poisoning her. She experienced symptoms including unexplained headaches, drowsiness, and diarrhea. Toxicology tests revealed the presence of MDMA and cocaine in her system, substances she claimed she hadn’t ingested intentionally.
Ruf confessed to Bishop that he had been contaminating her soft drinks with poison. This confession led to the discovery of a powdery substance in Coca-Cola cans that Bishop had saved for evidence.

Ruf admitted to authorities that he poisoned his wife to marry her 31-year-old daughter. He also claimed that he was in a sexual relationship with Bishop’s daughter and that she had helped him in the scheme by providing the poison.
Ruf stated that two other women were involved in the plan, though their identities and any charges against them are not yet clear.
Ruf has been sentenced to four years in prison, followed by five years of probation.
