Disney’s Hollywood Studios is holding a casting call for “The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure,” welcoming transgender men and women to audition.
This new production, set to debut at the Animation Courtyard Theater this fall, will replace the former show “Voyage of the Little Mermaid,” which ran from 1992 to 2020. The auditions, taking place in New York, are searching for actors to fill lead roles, including Ariel and Eric.
The casting call is notable for its inclusivity. Previously, casting calls would specify “man” or “woman” without indicating whether the role was open to transgender individuals.
The listing for Ariel seeks a “White woman, transgender woman” aged 18 to 30, standing 5’2” to 5’6”. Ariel is described as a “spirited, fun-loving, yet curious mermaid princess who longs to be a part of the human world,” and the role requires a lyrical pop soprano with a belt to C. For the role of Eric, Disney is looking for a “White man, transgender man” aged 18 to 30, standing 5’10” to 6’0”. Eric is characterized as “charismatic and fearless,” and this is a non-singing role.
The new show will feature beloved songs from “Voyage of the Little Mermaid,” including “Kiss the Girl” and “Daughters of Triton.” The production will incorporate “physical and projected puppetry,” using blacklight puppets and motion capture technology, similar to methods used in film production.
Walt Disney World News Today (WDW News Today) shared a photo of the casting call online on July 5. Executive producer Dai Ota highlighted the focus on romance, friendships, and personal growth among the young men in the show. The revamped production is set to make a significant impact by embracing diversity and inclusivity in its casting choices, setting a new standard for future Disney productions.
This new approach by Disney shows its commitment to inclusivity and representation, aligning with the broader movement toward greater diversity in the entertainment industry. The anticipation for “The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure” is building, with fans eager to see the fresh, inclusive take on this beloved story.
