They got married through the Mormon Church because they both grew up in the church. But the wedding wasn’t personal or true to who they are. Later, they realized it didn’t match their true identities either.
Shaye struggled with feeling like she was in the wrong body for years. In 2019 after years of struggling with gender dysphoria, Shaye came out to her wife that she is a transgender woman.
Gender dysphoria "refers to psychological distress that results from an incongruence between one’s sex assigned at birth and one’s gender identity," according to the American Psychiatric Association.
Shaye was scared about how Amanda would react and said she would not change if it meant they could stay together. But Amanda supported her. Their story became famous when Shaye shared it on social media. The video went viral. They said in the video that they want to have another wedding that shows who they really are.
“We didn’t do it our way the first time, but now we can do it in a way that’s true and most authentic to who we are,” Shaye, who is now 39, told PEOPLE.
Amanda, now 37, said they haven’t planned the new wedding yet but don’t want to follow old traditions. They just want a nice place for their family and friends to come together.
“This time around it’s the rainbow variety, it doesn’t have to fit into a tight box,” Amanda said.

Shaye and Amanda left the church and are raising their three kids. Their children were very loving and accepting when they learned about Shaye’s transition. They are happy living with two moms now.
“People think they lost their father, but I don’t think they feel like that at all,” Shaye said. “I’m just showing up more authentically in the world how I feel comfortable.”
